This place is incredibly scenic and certainly offers up a slice of Old Florida. A visit here makes it easy to see why people treated cemeteries as parks in Victorian times!
It’s believed that this cemetery was established by the Spanish in 1798. There’s a newer section of the cemetery that was added by the city of Fernandina Beach in the mid-1940s.
Many of the graves here date all the way back to 19th-century Spanish residents. You’ll find a wide array of citizens here, including rum runners, politicians, boat captains, magicians, lighthouse keepers, and more.
One of the most interesting things about this cemetery is that it’s reportedly haunted. Multiple ghost sightings have been reported over the years.
Victims of both yellow fever and typhoid fever epidemics were buried here. These tragic illnesses took the lives of many children, and so it’s not really surprising that the majority of alleged ghost sightings were of children wandering the cemetery grounds at night.
There are reports of eerie sounds heard at night and many ghost stories swirling around this haunted cemetery in Florida. Even so, it maintains a history, charm, and beauty that are unparalleled.
