A football game played by U.S. Marines just months before the Battle of Okinawa becomes the emotional centerpiece of Netflix’s upcoming World War II drama The Mosquito Bowl. The first official teaser gives viewers a much clearer sense of how Peter Berg’s film will balance the sport, the soldiers’ friendship, and the brutal realities of war.

Based on Buzz Bissinger’s 2022 book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, the film follows four talented college football players who put their athletic careers aside to enlist in the Marines after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tony Award nominee Tom Francis lead the cast.

The Mosquito Bowl will arrive in select theaters on October 30, 2026, before beginning its Netflix streaming run on November 25.

Four Football Stars Become Marines

The story centers on John McLaughry, Bob Bauman, Tony Butkovich, and David Schreiner, played by Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis respectively.

Before the war, the four men were among America’s top college football players. After Pearl Harbor, they leave behind the fame and promise of their athletic careers to serve in the Marine Corps.

Their journey eventually takes them into the Pacific Theater, where the excitement and camaraderie of football give way to the violence of World War II. As the Marines prepare for the invasion of Okinawa, the four men find themselves caught between their former lives and the realities of combat.

The real-life story culminates in a football game played by Marines on Guadalcanal on December 24, 1944. The game brought together 65 Marines from the 4th and 29th regiments of the 6th Marine Division before they were sent toward Okinawa.

Netflix describes the game as a legendary contest involving some of the greatest players of the era, with the knowledge that, for many of them, it would be the last football game they ever played.

Peter Berg Brings His Football and War Experience Together

The choice of Peter Berg as director gives The Mosquito Bowl a particularly fitting creative connection to its subject.

Berg created the television drama Friday Night Lights and directed the 2004 film adaptation, both based on Buzz Bissinger’s work. He now brings that football background to a story that places the sport directly alongside the battlefield.

Berg also co-wrote The Mosquito Bowl with Mark L. Smith, whose credits include The Revenant, Twisters, and American Primeval. Peter Berg produces through Film 44, alongside Brian Grazer for Imagine Entertainment and Alex Gayner, with Ezra Emanuel serving as executive producer. Bissinger is also an executive producer.

The First Trailer Puts Football and Combat Side by Side

The newly released teaser makes the relationship between football and war one of its central visual ideas.

It opens with a bird’s-eye view of a truck carrying new recruits through a swampy landscape. From there, the footage moves between military training, combat, and scenes of the players on the football field.

Bill Skarsgård’s character talks about the almost trance-like sensation he experiences while playing football, describing it as a “white buzz.” His words continue over images that deliberately connect the physical intensity of the sport with the violence of battle.

The trailer also spends time with the characters away from combat. There are glimpses of friendship, recreation, and quieter moments, including the group spending time together on a beach. Other scenes show fear, celebration, and an emotional response to a musical performance.

The effect is a montage in which the football field and the battlefield repeatedly mirror one another.

Brotherhood Is at the Heart of the Story

The footage makes it clear that The Mosquito Bowl is interested in more than the circumstances surrounding one famous football game.

Brotherhood appears to be one of the film’s defining themes, both among the players who share a history on the field and among the Marines who experience combat together.

That emotional connection becomes especially important because the football game represents a brief return to something familiar before the men face the invasion of Okinawa. The contrast between the joy of playing football and the uncertainty of what lies ahead gives the story much of its emotional weight.

Netflix’s first look similarly describes the film as an exploration of the cost of war and the bonds formed between the four young men as their lives are transformed by history.

Okinawa Could Be Just as Important as the Football Game

One of the most striking aspects of the teaser is how much attention it gives to the war itself.

Rather than presenting the football game as an isolated sports story, the footage repeatedly cuts from the gridiron to combat. The final moments move fully back to the battlefield, ending with a soldier being swept into the ocean as a massive wave rises around him.

That emphasis suggests that the Battle of Okinawa and the experiences of the four Marines will occupy a substantial portion of the finished movie.

It remains to be seen exactly how much screen time the football game receives compared with the combat sequences. However, the early footage suggests a structure that could give roughly equal weight to the sporting story and the war drama, somewhat reminiscent of Pearl Harbor (2001), which divides its narrative between the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Doolittle Raid.

How The Mosquito Bowl Differs From The Boys in the Boat

That approach could also set The Mosquito Bowl apart from another recent World War II sports drama, The Boys in the Boat, which was released in late 2023.

Directed by George Clooney, The Boys in the Boat follows the University of Washington rowing team as its members pursue a place at the Summer Olympics during the war. The film uses the athletes’ experiences to reflect the wider American experience of the period.

The crucial difference is where the characters stand in relation to the war.

The athletes in The Boys in the Boat are civilians whose sporting ambitions continue during wartime. The Mosquito Bowl, by contrast, focuses on athletes who have become active members of the military and are preparing to enter combat themselves.

That distinction gives the new film a much darker backdrop. Football is still a source of identity, friendship, and escape, but the players know they are heading toward a battle that could change everything.

When Will The Mosquito Bowl Be Released?

The Mosquito Bowl is scheduled to open in select U.S. theaters on October 30, 2026. It will then arrive on Netflix on November 25, 2026.

The film stars Nicholas Galitzine as John McLaughry, Bill Skarsgård as Bob Bauman, Ray Nicholson as Tony Butkovich, and Tom Francis as David Schreiner, with Brent Comer and Dominic Bogart also among the cast.

With Peter Berg returning to the world of football after Friday Night Lights and turning his attention to a true World War II story, The Mosquito Bowl is shaping up as a sports drama where the game itself carries a much heavier meaning.
