The Mosquito Bowl: Peter Berg Takes Four College Football Stars Into the Heart of World War II
A football game played by Marines on Guadalcanal becomes the unlikely starting point for Peter Berg’s latest war drama, The Mosquito Bowl. The film follows four gifted college athletes who leave behind promising sporting careers after the attack on Pearl Harbor and enlist in the U.S. Marines, eventually finding themselves caught in the brutal reality of the Pacific War.
Directed by Berg, whose credits include Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor, the film stars Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis. It is adapted from Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Buzz Bissinger’s 2022 nonfiction book, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II.

The teaser offers an early look at Berg’s approach to the story, moving between the camaraderie of football and the chaos of combat. The film’s four central characters begin as young athletes with bright futures ahead of them. Their decision to enlist soon places them in an environment where the rules of the football field give way to the much harsher realities of war.
Berg has emphasized the importance of keeping the film grounded in the experiences of the real men whose lives inspired it.
“This is very much a reality-based film,” Berg told Tudum. “We are representing forces larger than ourselves — honoring the men of the Marine Corps who sacrificed their lives in 1944 and 1945.”

A production built around realism
For Nicholas Galitzine, making the film meant experiencing the physical demands of the story as directly as possible.
The actor says the cast relied only sparingly on stunt doubles. The production involved explosions close to the actors, burning trees, fire reaching them during scenes, and the sounds of combat at close range. Galitzine described the experience as a level of immersion unlike anything he had encountered in his career.
Berg says the emotional side of the story is just as important as its action. He is interested in how love, compassion, and human connection can survive inside traumatic environments, with the film balancing intensity against emotion.

What is The Mosquito Bowl about?
The story begins after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when four of America’s leading college football players choose military service over their athletic careers.
John McLaughry, Bob Baumann, Tony Butkovich, and David Schreiner enlist in the Marines and leave behind the world they knew. Their transition from celebrated college athletes to young men preparing for combat forms the emotional core of the film.
As they enter the Pacific Theater, their football backgrounds remain an important part of who they are. The story ultimately builds toward a remarkable game played by Marines before the Battle of Okinawa, bringing together an extraordinary collection of football talent at a moment when their futures are increasingly uncertain.
The film explores the cost of war while focusing on the relationships forged between the men who face it together.

Is The Mosquito Bowl based on a true story?
Yes. The film is adapted from Buzz Bissinger’s 2022 nonfiction book, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. The book traces the lives of college football players who entered military service during World War II and the extraordinary football game that brought many of them together before the invasion of Okinawa.
The real game was played on Guadalcanal on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 1944, when the 4th and 29th Marine regiments faced each other. Their rosters included an unusually large concentration of college football talent. The game later became known as the Mosquito Bowl.
The story carries a particularly personal connection for Berg and Bissinger. Bissinger previously wrote Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, his acclaimed account of high school football in Odessa, Texas. Berg directed the 2004 film adaptation of Friday Night Lights and later developed the story into the 2006 television series. The Mosquito Bowl therefore reunites the two around another football story, this time set against World War II.
Bissinger’s book goes beyond the game itself, following the men from American college campuses into the Marines and eventually toward Okinawa. His account also examines the families and circumstances that shaped them, as well as the loss of innocence brought by the war.
The filmmakers approached that history with the responsibility that comes from portraying real people. Ray Nicholson says the cast understood that these were actual lives and worked with the belief that the story represented something larger than themselves.

Meet the cast and characters
The four central roles bring together four young athletes with very different personalities and strengths.
Nicholas Galitzine as John McLaughry
Galitzine plays John McLaughry, a natural leader on and off the football field.
McLaughry was a quarterback at Brown University, where he was coached by his father. The determination that made him a leader in college football becomes equally important when he enters the Marines and heads toward the Pacific.
Bill Skarsgård as Bob Baumann
Skarsgård portrays Bob Baumann, a larger-than-life personality who throws himself into everything with enormous energy.
Baumann played for the University of Wisconsin. On the football field and among his fellow Marines, he is portrayed as someone who approaches life head-on, bringing the same force to friendship and conflict alike.
Ray Nicholson as Tony Butkovich
Nicholson takes on Purdue star Tony Butkovich, an exceptional athlete who appeared destined for greatness.
Butkovich was regarded as one of the finest offensive players of his era and established records at Purdue. His athletic ability made him one of the standout figures among the football players who entered the Marines.
Tom Francis as David Schreiner
Francis plays David Schreiner, another University of Wisconsin player and Baumann’s teammate.
Where Baumann brings explosive energy, Schreiner approaches the game with a more measured and strategic mind.

The four actors formed their own bond
The connection between the four leads developed during months of preparation and production.
For Bill Skarsgård, the experience echoed the bonds at the heart of the story itself. Football creates one kind of camaraderie, the Marine Corps creates another, and the actors developed their own version of that brotherhood while making the film.
That shared preparation was particularly important for a film that asks its cast to portray athletes becoming soldiers and to capture the physical and emotional pressures of their transformation.

Where was The Mosquito Bowl filmed?
Production took place in Australia, with filming locations across Queensland and northern New South Wales.
The Australian landscape was used to represent several settings in the story, including Marine training grounds and locations standing in for the Pacific Theater. Berg praised Queensland’s scenery during production, describing the landscapes as ideal for bringing the story to the screen.
For Tom Francis, the production also marked a major career milestone. After his Tony-nominated Broadway performance in Sunset Boulevard, The Mosquito Bowl became his first film.
Francis described the five-month experience as the best five months of his life and said the relationships he formed during production would stay with him. He also reflected on how the cast’s experience changed them, saying they arrived as boys and left as men.

Peter Berg leads the creative team
Berg directs and produces The Mosquito Bowl, continuing his creative partnership with Netflix and Film 44 following American Primeval and Painkiller.
He produces alongside Brian Grazer for Imagine Entertainment and Alex Gayner. Ezra Emanuel, Buzz Bissinger, and Jeb Brody serve as executive producers.
The project also reunites Berg with Bissinger in a story where football once again becomes a way of examining something much larger than the sport itself.

When does The Mosquito Bowl come out?
The Mosquito Bowl opens in select theaters on Oct. 30, 2026, before arriving on Netflix on Nov. 25, 2026. Netflix lists the film as a 2026 action drama directed by Peter Berg and starring Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, Tom Francis, Brent Comer, and Dominic Bogart.
The film brings together football, military history, and the personal stories of four young men whose lives were transformed by World War II. At its center is a real chapter of history in which a football game offered a brief return to competition and camaraderie before the men faced the far more consequential battle ahead.
