The puzzle appeared during an episode of ITV’s The 1% Club, hosted by Lee Mack.
Unlike traditional quiz shows, The 1% Club focuses on logic, observation and problem-solving rather than facts contestants can memorise. Each episode begins with 100 players, who must work their way through increasingly challenging questions to reach the final puzzle.
The show’s unique format means contestants are not asked to know random information — they are tested on how they think.
The question on screen was:
“What letter appears most often in this question as the last letter of the words?”
It was classed as a 40% question, meaning it was expected to be solved by around 40% of the public.
At first glance, it looks like a simple counting challenge. However, the wording itself was the entire trick.
Seven contestants eliminated by one tiny detail
As the 30-second timer started running down, contestants rushed to work out what they needed to count.
The difficulty came from remembering that the answer was hidden inside the question itself. Instead of searching for a complicated pattern, players had to examine every word and identify which letter appeared most often at the end.
When the timer reached zero, seven contestants had failed to find the answer.
Lee Mack even joked about one player leaving their decision until the final moments as the pressure built.
