A move few BBC viewers ever expected is now being called the biggest step backwards of Naga Munchetty’s career. Her decision to walk away from BBC Breakfast after 17 years has left fans stunned, with growing speculation that the story behind her exit may be far more complicated than it first appeared. The surprise departure has reignited questions about what’s happening behind the scenes—and whether even bigger changes are still to come for the BBC’s flagship morning show. One career-changing decision. One show under pressure. And a BBC shake-up that’s only just beginning.

Naga Munchetty’s shock BBC Breakfast moves feels like a step down

OPINION = Jess Phillips: As though the BBC wasn’t already in enough trouble, Naga Munchetty has twisted the knife.

Naga Munchetty has quit BBC Breakfast after 17 years on the famous red sofa, leaving Charlie Stayt without a co-host. It might not sound so surprising to many fans; after all, Naga – along with Charlie and boss Richard Frediani – has been embroiled in allegations of “bullying”, and in November a formal investigation was reportedly launched by the broadcaster into said accusations. There have been rumours of feuds between Naga and her co-stars – though nothing concrete was ever proven – and the BBC already announced budget cuts to the morning show earlier this year.

But now I fear Naga has hammered the final nail in the coffin for Breakfast by handing in her notice. First you have veterans like Louise Minchin and Carol Kirkwood throwing in the towel, and now Naga – the one star who made the programme bearable for me – is giving up. Ostensibly it’s to join BBC Radio 5 Live as a co-presenter five days a week.

On the surface it makes sense. BBC radio salaries have been at the top of the public list of top earners – in 2025-2026 Scott Mills made a whopping £745,000, compared to Naga’s £360,000, for his Radio 1 role.

But is Naga really going to reach more listeners on the radio compared to Breakfast viewers? The 5 Live Breakfast show reaches an average audience of around 1.4million weekly, while the TV show has a daily average of 6.8million. It feels like quite a step down for her, despite her describing the move as “simply too good to pass up”.

She’ll officially step down from her TV role in December 2026, meaning we’ll be down to three main presenters – Jon Kay, Sally Nugent and Charlie Stayt. Without Naga, however, I can’t see Charlie staying long either, and with more budget cuts looming, there’s a good chance Sally and Jon could be asked to present five days a week instead of three.
