As third-year offensive linemen Austin Barber stepped to the lectern Tuesday for Florida’s post-practice media session, it was immediately apparent Barber had swiftly departed from the heat and humidity of the outdoors to the third floor of the air-conditioned, as sweat continued to drip down his face and onto his Florida-issued collared shirt.

“I know some of y’all were out there,” Barber said to the media contingent in attendance. “It was warm. But, no, it was a great day. The heat’s everything we fight for. That’s like, that’s the Gator standard that we play in, day in and week in, week out, when we’re at home. So I think we fought through it well today. I think a lot (of us) were good in the heat today.”

To his credit, Barber presumably has less difficulty handling the heat than he did at this point last year, when Barber was considered a fringe starter within the program, which wasn’t a slight for the then- second-year player as UF possessed an offensive line brimming with experienced starters.

Now, Barber appears noticeably slimmer after losing fat and gaining muscle during the offseason workout program, his third thus far in his UF career.

As impressive as the offensive lineman from Jacksonville’s physical transformation may be, Barber, who is projected to start at left tackle for the Gators this season, doesn’t list his physical development as his most noteworthy area of improvement as he prepares to start UF’s season-opener at Utah on Aug. 31.

Looking to play a critical role in defending the blind side of UF’s starting quarterback this season, Barber has prioritized becoming a more vocal leader in the locker room, despite the third-year tackle still possessing an underclassmen label.

“I was put into a big role and a few of the older guys left, and some of them are in the NFL, some of them went different places, and I think I got put in a place to where leadership was the main thing for me,” he said, “and I think I took it and ran with it, and I’ve been handling it really well.”

It’s a role he feels he’s ready for after observing a mix of upperclassmen in 2022, including O’Cyrus Torrence, Kingsley Eguakun, Michael Tarquin, Richard Gouraige and Ethan White, lead the way for the unit during Barber’s redshirt freshman season with the program.

While Eguakun returns with two consecutive seasons of starting experience at center to his name, UF’s offensive line lost a majority of its starting experience from the roster, though Barber and Richie Leonard did combine to start six games for the Gators last season.

Aware it’s in the best interest for the team’s development, Barber and Leonard, alongside Eguakun, are looking to assert themselves as vocal leaders within Florida’s locker room and on the practice field as the Gators ramp up fall camp practices.

“There’s sometimes I sat back and let the older guys go in because I was a redshirt freshman last year, but now I think I can come in and be vocal leader and take over, and me and Kingsley work together,” Barber said Tuesday. “Me, Kingsley, Richie (Leonard) are pushing this O-line to the best of their ability.”

For some players, stepping up and speaking publicly to teammates can be a daunting task, and it’s worth noting vocal direction and assertion is hardly the lone avenue to exemplify leadership within an athletic program.

Barber, however, was undaunted at the thought of articulating guidance to his fellow Gators.

“I try to always be a vocal leader. I tried before last year, and I think I fell into it a little bit. I think I pushed myself up each week, each time I stepped on the field, and I think that’s just helped me out,” Barber said. “And then confidence from all the teammates, all the guys, they’ve pushed me to be a leader, and I think it’s just helped me build my confidence.”

It’s still the early days of fall camp, but Barber understands eyes are already on him, from coaches and teammates alike.

In a position to resume his place as a starter at tackle for the Gators, Barber has witnessed his fellow teammates, particularly freshmen and second-year players within the program, pay attention and take mental notes as the 6-foot-6, 305-pound left tackle hones his craft and continues to go about his preparation ahead of what is expected to be his most productive season thus far at the collegiate level.

It’s reminiscent of where Barber was not too long ago – a newly acquired player looking to earn coveted playing time – and he appears eager to do what others did for him: lead the way for the betterment of the program.

“I think guys that just got here, there’s a few in the spring, and (summer), want to follow a guy that’s played a lot of snaps, that people listen to, and I feel like I’m up for the challenge,” Barber said. “I’m ready for the challenge.”
